More stellar racing even in December! David Demres won the Christopher Martins 5K this Sunday! Nice work David and great winter training.
Last weekend's racing:
Katie Devir had a very good race at the Hot Chocolate 15K despite a totally chaotic race that was seriously disorganized (race director sent and email apologizing). She didn't let it rattle her and ran a strong 15K!
Allison Kerr started the California International Marathon and had to pull out she's been sick and wasn't feeling any better on race day. She'll be training for triathlons this season, so girls watch out!
David Demres ran the 5K at the Yale season opener on the indoor track and finished 3rd overall with a solid race performance.
I'm working on keeping all our heads warm this winter :) I'll be ordering knit caps for everyone with Coach Kelli on them :). They should be here by January.

Congratulations to Claudia Herrera for finishing her first Ironman this past weekend in Cozumel! Claudia did a great job and is now an Ironwoman! By luck I ran into Claudia in line to the swim start so that was great to wish her luck and to enjoy her day. What a way to celebrate turning 40!

Happy Thanksgiving athletes! Hope everyone is enjoying turkey today, relaxing and having a good time.
A recap of racing, more great racing for Coach Kelli athletes!
Joe Flaherty set a new PR in Ironman Arizona this past weekend, 11:20! Joe got stuck on the tarmac for a long time and by the time he got off the plane his back was killing him. We should all learn to be calm and cool under duress like Joe. It saved his race. He got a few massages, epson salt baths and kept positive. By Sunday his back wasn't perfect but it was doable. He had a strong race despite some trouble with hamstring cramps that hindered him on the run. Way to go Joe!
Jason Atwater set a big PR in the Philadelphia marathon last weekend running a stellar pace for 3:20 marathon! Nice work!
Katie Devir in the 5 mile Turkey Trot today ran sub 8 min miles to set a new PR too! (that would be her PR in the 5K too). Katie just keeps getting faster, it must be all that consistent training she did this season.
Ray Long went for the Boston qualifier time and was on target, but had a tough second half. Nice job going for it Ray!
Up this weekend is Ironman Cozumel for Claudia Herrara and Coach Kelli. I arrived on Monday to try to heat aclimate and it certainly is hot, humid and sun is strong, despite the temp reading it feels hotter than it reads! We'll see what race day brings as far as winds, right now they say light, but windy run. It seems to change all the time. It's very nice here and the water is beautiful to swim in so I can't complain!
Coach had some bike issues, my cassette wasn't shifting well and I needed a new one. No small thing here where bike parts are seriously limited. I think I rented the only cassette on the whole island! It took a day and half to get it all figured out and the fact I don't speak spanish wasn't helping me! Lesson learned don't check your shifting on the trainer, take it for a ride outside, my new Cannondale has a new chain and with the fairly new cassette I only ride on my race wheels must be worn enough to cause problems. My rented cassette has moutain gears, which I can't figure out why you would have that here since there are absoltely no hills! My husband is coming on Saturday with the perfect cassette so hopefully I can make the change to have the ideal gears, but if not I have enough to get the job done. I have to say it was a little stressful, but I just kept reminding myself there was time to get it figured out. Even after years of racing you can make a mistake and overlook something, but the key is not to stress out.
Coach will give it 100% on race day and I am sure I will be sure to send the race report! It should be a fun venue and good crowds especially on the run.
Enjoy your day!
Kelli
October 31st
Miami 70.3
David Ellis had a very strong race and set a new PR by 1/2 an hour in tough conditions! David finished 12th in the 25-29 age-group in a tough field. David has had a really great season this year and this is a fine way to finish it off! Just wait until next year he'll really be tough! He puts in the hard work and trains consistently and you can see that in his results.
Coach Kelli's Report
The remnants of hurricane Rita made for some challenging race conditions out on the course with rain, wind, and humidity. While getting ready in transition it was raining light then heavy. While waiting for the swim start it was absolutely pouring, which thankfully in Miami it was still in the 70's so it wasn't too cold. It was a non-wetsuit swim and the swim itself was fairly flat, it was fun to swim alongside the Miami high-rises. The first 5 miles on the bike had a lot of water on the roads because it had been raining a lot in the last few days so you needed to be careful especially on the railroad tracks. Then it was a straight shot out to the turn around cone at the halfway point. The way out was into the cross-wind and head wind so I figured ok we'll hit the cone and then have a tailwind. The tailwind was great for about 10 miles and then the really bad crosswind and head wind was tough the rest of the way it was really blowing. I have been training for IM Cozumel so the legs were not exactly rested. I rode well for 38 miles and then my legs just didn't want to ride fast anymore fighting the wind. I was one happy camper to ditch the bike by the time I hit transition! The run course is 2 laps and you run over the causeway bridge and back for 4 decent hills. Going towards the bridge and over, the wind was tough I felt myself leaning forward! What was fun is that Dave and I ran a few miles together, that was fun to see him on the course. I was running very well up until the last 2 miles when whamo my asthma got triggered big time, I was suddenly reduced from my nice 7 min. pace to ok how do I now make the finish! I absolutely struggled and had to slow significantly and still managed to finish with my best 1/2 time this year! I won the 35-39 age-group and was 5th amateur female. I'm looking forward to some rested legs in Cozumel in one month! At the finish we also posed for pics in our Brooks T7 shoes for the Blazeman family, it was very nice to meet them too! For those of you who are not familiar the Blazeman Foundation it was set up for in honor of their son who had ALS. Chrissie Wellington is a big supporter of that foundation and part of the proceeds from the T7's goes to their foundation. A fun race I would do again for sure!

Hi Athletes,
Some great late season racing by Coach Kelli Athletes!
Newport Marathon once again Katie Devir had another PR (she has PR'd every race except one 5K this year!)! What a way to finish off the season, coach is ecstatic! Katie did a lot of longer races this season so after her last 1/2 IM in Sept. she had a tougher time recovering to train for the last marathon. We decided it was best to rest a little more and forgo the long runs leading up to the marathon as they would just break her down more. To train hard you need to be recovered. She recovered in-time and kept her head and confidence even though her training was not typically what you would do for a marathon. Race day she went out and enjoyed and had a great performance!
Hartford Marathon
Lori Gillette finished her first marathon! Way to go Lori! After traveling for work and getting sick close to the race Lori came back to have a solid first marathon. She's already thinking about her next one, she's hooked :)
Larry Wood didn't end up racing due to getting the flu. Maybe we'll see him in the trail 1/2 marathon in a few weeks since now he is feeling better.
Hartford Half Marathon
Cindy Seip had a solid performance to end her season. She battled hard through calf cramps and some IT band pain to go under 2hrs! Nice job Cindy!
George Dickerson also caught a cold race week and wasn't 100% (seems to be some nasty germs lurking this week), but had a fantastic performance anyways! He's worked hard to make some nutrition changes and it's made all the difference in his energy levels and his ability to train and race. Shows you the power of food!
Ray Long set a PR in the half marathon by 3 minutes! Ray is getting ready for the Phili marathon and without resting ran a PR, he'll be ready to set a PR in the marathon for sure! Nice job Ray!
Once again coach can't be happier with the performances.
Up this weekend David Ellis and Coach Kelli will be racing Miami 70.3. Both David and I are looking forward to some sun and warm weather and racing hard! David is fit and ready to race well in Miami. I will be away Friday thru Monday (mom should make it back for trick or treating with the kids) and will do my best to answer emails as soon as I can.

World Age-Group Triathlon Championships Beijing China
Mark Salisbury had a very good race with tough competition from around the world and a challenging course. He finished 7th in the 35-39 age-group and 2nd American for that age-group! It was Mark's first World Champs and he said it was a great experience. Nice performance Mark!
Madison Triathlon
David Ellis finished 2nd overall male and had a strong race with no taper. He's on a roll now watch out!
Larry Wood finished 3rd in his age-group 65-69 just 5 days after running New Haven. Way to go Larry!
Joe Flaherty 2nd in his age-group and put together another great performance after a great 70.3 race a few weeks ago! Nice job Joe!
Jason Atwater finished 4th in the 30-34 age-group and 11th overall even with very limited bike and swim training. Jason is getting ready for the Philadelphia Marathon and he's working hard on his run.
Ed Vescovi finished 7th in the 45-49 age-group and raced well despite no taper to get ready for a longer race late this season. Ed is showing improvement in just a short while with some coaching.
Susan Wines was leading the women's race and had a huge lead coming off the bike, but as decided before the race that she would not run since she is recovering from her calf injury. She's happy to be back running this week. Her swimming and biking were strong watch out for Susan next season!
George Dickerson finished 8th in the 50-54 age-group and had a strong race to finish up his triathlon season. A big thanks to George who cheered me on in the race in RI!
Firmman 1/2 Ironman RI
Katie Devir also was significantly faster than last years 1/2 IM race and finished 6th in the 35-39 age-group. Katie has been on a roll all season! Up next the Newport Marathon.
Claudia Herrera had a PR of 25 minutes and is getting ready for her first IM in Cozumel in November. Great job Claudia!
Coach Kelli -I know some of you like to hear my race reports so that's why I write it up in the results and hopefully you can learn from some of my experiences too. The swim was a little rough, but that is typical whenever I've raced in RI. I liked the swim with the waves for me I think it is fun, reminds me when I was a kid and we would got to RI and body surf all day long. The seaweed about 25 yards from the finish was amazing it was like a bonanza! There was so much you couldn't even swim through it! We were laughing after the race that we still had seaweed stuck on us-we all had wetsuits on too! The bike was an adventure with riding mostly on route 1, I felt like I was on the freeway with the cars zooming by. They had some road repair going on and there was a section of grooved pavement around 7 miles and then the last 6 miles was all grooved pavement into a nice headwind! When I got off the bike I felt really off and stood in transition one to find my bike and two b/c I felt out of it. What was funny was the announcer was like here comes the first female...and 30 sec later or so "we seem to be having some trouble finding our bike"... ok I was feeling pretty silly then but couldn't get myself together. I finally found my bike I just needed to look left, amazing what you can't do when you are scrambled. Got my run gear on and headed out on the run feeling pretty bad, I walked through the first aid station and tried to gather myself and figure out what the heck the problem was I went through my checklist in my head. Started to run again and still felt bad and thought if I still feel this way in 2 miles maybe I need to call it a day. I started to feel little better, but I never felt 100% during the run. It was a good exercise in mental toughness and I was doing my best to get to the finish. The last 2.5 miles my asthma really kicked in and I wheezed to the finish line (the last 1/2 mile was on the beach). After it was all over and I had time to think about it I believe my asthma was acting up toward the tail end of the bike and then all the vibration from the grooved pavement made me motion sick. I was very pleased with the effort given I had to fight my way through it and given all that I won the race. In training I've "learned to endure" with the tough brick workouts and run training on tired legs. The consistency in training over the past 2 years has made me very fit so on bad days I can get it done and I can handle it mentally because I've also trained that end too. Besides my race it was great to see Katie and Claudia too! For me it was a great weekend since I was able to see and talk to many of you in person and see you race.
Farmington Women's Triathlon
Cindy Seip finished 6th in her age-group (50-54) in her first triathlon ever and enjoyed the race! Way to go Cindy!
Nations Triathlon in DC
Sue Davis completed her first Olympic distance triathlon! Unfortunately they canceled the swim due to bacteria in the water, they replaced the swim with a 2.3 mile run making it a duathlon. Personally I think duathlons hurt a lot more than tri's so Sue's event got harder with the extra run! Sue had a good steady first run, strong bike and toughed it out with foot injury on the second run, proving she is a tough competitor! Nice job Sue!
New Haven Road Race on Labor Day
Kevin Roach, Larry Wood, and Jason Atwater ran the New Haven road race as part of their training for their upcoming marathons. Solid pacing for all on humid day!
This past weekend at the Hammerfest Triathlon in Branford
David Ellis had his 2nd place overall, just getting outrun in the last .25 mile (superstar collegiate runner tracked him down). David did this on no taper and training for Miami 70.3. That makes 2 second place finishes in a row! Well done David!
Ed Vescovi finished 2nd in the 45-49 age-group and 12th overall with another strong performance on no taper getting ready for some longer racing! Nice job!
Susan Wines did the bike portion with the relay and had a much faster split than last year showing the hard work building strength is starting to show! Excellent work Susan!
WOW that is a lot of results and impressive folks, keep up the good work!

Last weekends Racing
Ironman Kentucky
Congrats to Stephanie Mismas in completing her first Ironman in windy conditions! Great work and enjoy your success!
Ironman Canada
Ray Long had a great race (steady across all 3 legs) and met his goal of being under 12hrs. Nice job Ray, rest up and enjoy your success too!
Xrteme Scramble at Winding Trails
Chris Gillette had a good race and finished 7th in his age-group.
8/21 Timberman 70.3
Joe Flaherty had a fantastic race in setting a PR, and one much deserved! He's battled injuries and illness and fought hard, congrats Joe!
Ed Vescovi had a very good race getting under the 5hr mark and finishing 9th in his age-group (45-49). Ed's made some quick improvements in a short time training the way we do, watch out!
Larry Wood after some bad luck in IM Lake Placid this year had a good day and finished 3rd in his age-group (65-69), I was really happy to see him have a good day.
8/21 Park City Olympic Triathlon - Katie Devir finished on the podium with a 3rd in her age-group (35-39)! Next up is Firmman 1/2 ironman
8/20 Age-Group National Championship in Burlington VT
By far it was the most competitive age-group championship race I've seen (and I've been at it since 1992!). The women's race was won by the Susan Williams the Bronze Olympic Medalist in Triathlon. It was a nice venue and atmosphere, logistically a little challenging but I would think about going back next year to race again. So if you are interested think about qualifying and racing for 2012.
Mark Salisbury was 4th in the 35-39 age-group even with mechanical problems on the bike that prevented him from riding in the large chain ring (which you really needed on the second half of the course since there was a tail wind and it was mostly downhill!) Even with that Mark finished very high in his age-group. Next up for Mark on September 11th is the ITU Age-group World Championship in Beijing, China. This will be Mark's first World Championship. Mark will be ready to rip up the course!
David Ellis competed in his first age-group championship race and had a solid race. He's been juggling a new baby in the family too! Nice job Dave!
Coach Kelli didn't have her best performance, but I did finish 4th in the (35-39 age-group). I was a little frustrated with my race, but that's racing sometimes. I had a very busy week with camping, family vacation, and then right into traveling and then racing. I was just exhausted race day and lacked the oomph I needed, but that's how it goes when you have other life commitments. I wouldn't trade my older one's excitement of riding his first trails on the mountain bike and taking him camping-I'd sacrifice a few places any day for that! Little rest this week and then time to train for IM Cozumel!
Sprint Age-Group National Championship in Burlington VT
It was hot for the sprint race since it didn't start until 12:30 pm, by then it was 87 degrees. Jane Reik battled it out had fun and a strong race! Jane finished 11th (50-54 age-group) n a very competitive field. Way to go Jane!
This week Ray Long will race Ironman Canada - great race, beautiful course and location! Ray is ready for a really great race!
Stephanie Mismas will do her first Ironman in Kentucky, she is more than ready for the challenge!
Let's cheer them on this weekend while riding out what looks to be a hurricane coming! Stay safe everyone.
8/8
Niantic Triathlon (rainy and rough swim conditions):
Larry Wood after getting injured at IM Lake Placid which ended his day rallied back and had a fantastic race! He took 7.5 minutes off his time from last year in bad conditions! He also finished 3rd in his age-group (65-69) Larry will be SUPER ready for Timberman 70.3 in 2 weeks!
David Ellis won his age-group (25-29) and finished 7th overall! He didn't rest for the race and still had a very good performance! That should boost his confidence for Nationals in 2 weeks!
Ed Vescovi had a good strong race finishing 5th in his age-group (45-49) and will be ready for Timberman 70.3 in a few weeks!
Susan Wines had a great swim but suffered a calf injury that ended her day early on the run. I am sure Susan will make a speedy recovery and be back out there soon.
Camp Pendleton Sprint in San Diego CA
Mark Salisbury battled 4-6 foot waves and a strong currents in his race. (Ok Mark you win the tough swim award for the weekend the 4-6 ft seas beat the long island sound rough waters :) ) He finished 2nd overall in a large field (1300 racers), that should give him some great confidence going into Age-Group Nationals in VT!
Greenwich Cup Triathlon
George Dickerson had a solid race and placed 8th out of 33 in his age group with very little sleep after traveling back from CO after being away for the week.
Coach Kelli had a good race in prep for Nationals in 2 weeks. I have to say it was a little painful after a hard week of training so I am looking forward to a little leg rest for Nationals to see what I can do! I won the race for the women, which was the first time after many times doing this race. I always finished just out in 2nd or 3rd so it was nice to win finally!
7/29
Last weekend we had some exciting racing at Ironman Lake Placid and Amica 19.7 New London!
IM Lake Placid
Shane Kokoruda and Jason Atwater completed their first Ironman race and did it very well!
Shane Kokoruda had a strong first Ironman on a challenging course even with some stomach issues during the run. He finished up the run with one of his friends and really enjoyed the experience. Shane also exceeded his fundraising expectations for his foundation Jacob's Team Foundation. Nice job Shane you did it!
Jason Atwater had another strong first Ironman race with a good swim, really strong bike, and fought hard on the run. He also fought through some stomach problems on the run. He too enjoyed the experience of racing an Ironman! He has only been racing triathlons a short time so it really shows he's got some potential to keep getting faster. Nice job Jason!
For those of you haven't done IM, each time you do an IM you get more experience with the nutrition, pacing and the race distance itself. You guys did great on your first shot!
Larry Wood had some bad luck in the swim that cut his day short. Larry was really ready to race his best that day, unfortunately he got hit really hard in the shoulder on the first turn of the first lap. He swam using his left arm for the rest of the first lap because his right shoulder hurt too much. Larry is one tough competitor so I know he must have gotten hit really hard! It's disappointing and frustrating after all the hard work when something like this happens that isn't in your control. Larry will rally and seek some revenge in Niantic and Timberman in August!
Amica 19.7 New London
After a brief thunderstorm 30 minutes before the start that left the roads wet and very steamy race conditions Coach Kelli, Susan Wines, David Ellis, and Jane Zee had some fun and worked hard out on the course.
It was a 1-2 punch with Coach Kelli and Susan Wines taking the top 2 spots for the girls, with Jane Zee winning her age-group(50-54)! Susan set a PR on the course too! Nice job ladies! David Ellis finished 5th overall for the guys and 2nd in his age-group(25-29) with another solid performance. It was fun to race and chat with the group too. I've posted some pics on facebook from the race. It's under Coach Kelli Personal Coaching

Hi Athletes,
Again we had some great racing this weekend and it was fun for me to see athletes on the course and at the venue in Rhode Island.
San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island (Southwest Regional Championships)
Mark Salisbury out in San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island finished 2nd in the 35-39 age-group and 9th overall! Mark has been battling injuries and just relocated back West did a great job considering he's not been able to train consistently. This race is a great way for him to get back to racing and be ready for Age-group nationals in August. Great work Mark!
Sobe Mossman Triathlon
Jane Reik won her age-group (50-54) and most likely in the top 5 overall! She ran her best 5K of the season! Nice job Jane, the 50-54 age group better look out at Sprint Nationals for you in August!
Rhode Island 70.3 Triathlon
Paul Radinieri finished his first half IM strong. He's been battling injury which limited his training some, but it didn't slow him down yesterday! Congrats Paul!
Stephanie Mismas had a strong performance and improved on last years half performance. She'll be ready for her first IM in Kentucky in August! Good work out there Stephanie!
Ray Long after some hard training last weekend had a solid race on some tired legs, he's gearing up for IM Canada in August. Nice job Ray!
Coach Kelli was really happy with her race yesterday! After I struggled the early part of the season with the foot injury and then immediately following with asthma troubles I was finally feeling 100% on race day. It really goes to show sometimes you have to preserver and work through the rougher spots. It was very frustrating to get injured after all the hard work and then follow that with the asthma and allergies. I knew that eventually it would all turn back in the right direction. I made some dietary changes (I have some food sensitivities) that have helped not only my asthma, but my energy levels have much improved. Goes to show you the power of food!
The course was different than previous years, I liked the old course was better. The ocean swim was nice and the bike ride at least only had the 7 railroad tracks (yes I counted this time), but they added a horrible section, which was deemed a no pass zone. It was the worst road conditions I've ever had in a race, tire eating potholes, divots, bumps, lumps, water bottles ejected, gravel, dirt you name it it was on there! It was I think close to a mile (at least it felt like it). Not sure what race organizers were thinking there b/c it sure was not safe! I'm sure a few people crashed and wrecked wheels there. The run was similar with the nasty steep, rather longish hill by Brown Univ. that you race 2x.
I had a good swim, I couldn't see the buoys on the way out so I estimated where to swim b/c sun just hoped for the best on that one. The bike I felt like I rode well I was cautious with the traffic in passing and the crazy roughed up section, falling down and breaking something wouldn't be good this week with the Kids Tri to run this weekend! Overall good bike for me. The run, I was really excited I put together a good run finally. I knew I had it in me! I ran strong the whole way and I enjoyed it, I was smiling out there. I finished 2nd in my age-group and 2nd amateur overall-there was a speedster in my age-group who finished 4th out of the pros, I was 7th out of all the woman-psyched about that! I passed on my slot for 70.3 World Champs in Vegas as I will be racing IM Cozumel in November. I'm looking forward to racing the rest of the season should be fun!

Hi Athletes,
Catching up on the great racing efforts:
June 23rd Chris Gillette ran a muddy X-treme Scramble and finished a stellar 6th place in his age-group and had some serious fun!
Katie Devir after a hard week at a conference had another PR by 2 minutes in the Fairfield 1/2 Marathon on June 26th, she's certainly on a roll!
Racing at Lake Terramungus:
Ray Long last week Ray took one minute off his PR there! Nice work, he's ready for the weekend!
Paul Radinieri had a strong race getting ready for RI too!
6/24
Hi Athletes,
David Ellis had a good race just one week after the birth of his daughter. He put in a very good effort finishing 3rd in his 25-29 age-group and 16th overall. Nice job David!
Larry Wood had a good day and felt strong on the bike. He also made the podium finishing 3rd in the 65-69 age-group. He'll be ready for IM Lake Placid next month.
It's official your coach is now a USA Triathlon Level 2 Coach! It was some work to acquire (training time in CO, demo of coaching skills, and a very long written exam), but the effort was well worth it.

Hi Athletes,
I am certainly impressed with the fantastic racing performances all around this weekend! Coach is really proud to be coaching such a great group of athletes!
First in the Rev 3 Olympic Distance race on Saturday Katie Devir set a 17 minute PR!!! All around she swam better, rode better and really nailed the run (she averaged over a minute faster per mile)! Way to go Katie!
On Sunday we had Rev 3 1/2 Ironman race, it's one really tough course! All were up to the challenge and performed very well!
Larry Wood finished 2nd in his age-group 65-69 and went 25 minutes faster than last year! He's just come back from a quad injury, but even with his limited running before the race he did great. He consistently puts in the work all year round. Nice job Larry, next IM Lake Placid!
Jason Atwater had a really strong race all around getting under the 5hr mark (not easy on a hard slow course). He finished the race with a strong run. He's also been working hard and will be ready to rock IM Lake Placid! Also a big congrats on the birth of his 2nd daughter Carson Quinn on May 23rd!
Shane Kokoruda put in another strong performance for the day and was close to his time at last years Timberman (a much faster course), great improvement for him too. He'll also be ready to race IM Lake Placid in July! Way to go Shane!
Ray Long had a very good race too on Sunday, solid across the board which shows very good fitness to carry into the rest of the season. He'll be ready for IM Canada in late August (great race and beautiful course!). Nice job Ray!
Chris Gillette did the infamous Alcatraz Triathlon this past weekend and he handled the cold and rough swim really well! Chris is new to triathlons(doesn't come swim background), did his first last year. He put in the work all winter and spring to get ready for the race. He even braved the water in CT in May to get used to swimming in cold water. Awesome job Chris!
Coach Kelli and George Dickerson raced the Ludlow Sprint Triathlon in MA on Sunday. George had a solid race in prep for next weeks Eagleman Aquabike in MD. He finished 6th in the 50-54 age-group too! Coach Kelli finally did a whole race this year and had no trouble with the asthma or foot-what a relief! I finished 2nd overall female after a hard week of training. I felt good about my fitness and now it's time to rest up for Eagleman 70.3 this weekend. I'll be shooting to hopefully earn a slot for Kona there. I'll give it everything I have on that day! I sure am inspired by all of you guys!
6/17
Good afternoon athletes,
This weekend is the Griskus Olympic Triathlon at Quassy on Saturday. David Ellis is racing (he's a new dad too to Eva who was born last weekend, Congrats David! She's really cute too :), and Larry Wood. Race hard guys both of you have worked hard, rip up the course!
6/13
Hi Athletes,
Still waiting on a few race reports from Seaside Sprint Triathlon in Bridgeport. Congrats to Susan Wines she was first overall female! Nice work Susan! Joe Flaherty did his first race of the season and raced well just missing the podium in 4th place in his age-group. Great job Joe! Waiting to hear from David Ellis and Jane Reik.
George Dickerson did the Aquavelo at Eagelman. He had a tough time, probably got a little overheated in the water and felt sick on the bike the whole way. I give him credit after puking on his arm while still riding he kept on going! We are driving back today and looking forward to getting home.
5/23
We had some great racing this past weekend!
David Ellis won 1st overall at the "Y" Tri in Milford this past weekend! He worked really hard this winter and it shows in his first tri of the season! Nice job!
Shamrock Duathlon: Lori Gillette did her first Duathlon on a challenging course of the Glastonbury Hills and did great! Congrats Lori! Her husband Chris had a strong race in prep for the Alcatraz Triathlon he'll do in a few weeks- the race should give him great confidence! Waiting to hear from Paul on his race.
Shane Kokoruda waiting to here how the relay went too. I'll report as soon as I hear.
Coach Kelli had to forgo racing, darn sinus infection!
Last week racing:
Jane Reik ran Bishops 5K and finished 2nd in the 50-59 age-group she ran 30 sec faster than last weeks 5K! Way to go Jane!
Susan Wines started her season with a 5K with the family, even her kids ran the fun run!
4/19
This past Sunday was New Orleans 70.3, we had some good racing even with the cancellation of the swim due to the 25 mph wind coming off the lake. We were all a bit disappointed about no swim. We didn't think the conditions were that bad, they said they couldn't set the buoys and the kayaks might not make it to rescue people. It was worse the day before when George and I swam and we were fine, but that's the way it goes some time. So since I wasn't running it left me just with a bike ride (most expensive bike ride I've ever done!). It was a cool start to the morning and the humidity was down so it wasn't too bad heat wise for the race, actually beautiful day. It was very windy on the bike!
Ray Long had a very good race all around to get the tri season rolling. More great racing to come for Ray this year!
George Dickerson also had a very good bike and first half of the run and then fought leg cramps the second half. He hung tough!
Coach - Had just a bike ride to do (foot is still healing), they sent people off 2 sec apart starting on the bike, which made for a very crowded ride. With a flat course, wind, some bumpy roads, and a lot of athletes it made for a draft fest. I put an honest hard effort in for 40 miles and then in my moment of weakness (yes even your coach has them) I just decided to cruise in from there. At that point I was frustrated with the whole experience. Besides the race I've certainly enjoyed New Orleans (it's a fun place!), gotten a little vacation time, and enjoyed seeing Ray and George race.

The local multi-sport racing season has started with the Beachside Boogie in Madison. David Ellis started off the season with a really good performance finishing second overall! He had two strong run legs and bike even on non-rested legs. David's hard work and consistency is already paying off with more to come this season!
Ray Long raced the Eastern States 20 miler on 3/27 and ran a PR on the course! He'll be ready to race 70.3 New Orleans this weekend!
I'll be looking forward to seeing Ray race along with George Dickerson in New Orleans this Sunday. I'll either racing the swim, bike and cheering event or doing the whole race due to a stress fracture in my 4th metatarsal that has been healing for a month. We'll see if doctor clears me to run on Wednesday. I've been keeping fit by water running and elliptical besides biking and swimming. Either way it will be a fun time I'm sure! George and Ray are ready to go!
Chrissie Wellington broke the IM record yesterday in South Africa with an 8:33 (ok that's crazy fast...she had the fastest marathon out of all the men and women!). Here is what she had to say on xtri interview that I thought was good to share and for all of you to keep in mind when training and racing.
"I think it is very important for people to set short and long term goals, talking to a coach or trusted athletes for advice if necessary. These goals can be for each training session, and then longer term goals are races that you want to do. Each day is a stepping stone. It is also important to reward yourself when you achieve your goal - have a bar of chocolate or a nice glass of wine! Make sure you celebrate your victories and try to learn you're your mistakes or your 'bad days'. Remember that above all it is supposed to be fun - so smile and enjoy it.
A couple of things I have learnt along the way are to really listen to your body. The more you rely on gadgets such as heart rate monitors the more difficult it is to develop a deep intuition about your body and its reactions. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that more is necessarily better (eg more miles and hours does not necessarily mean faster and stronger).
My former running coach, a man called Frank Horwill, always said "there is no such word as cant, only I will try". I always try to live by that motto, and give everything I possibly can. You might not succeed at first but never give up - you can achieve your dreams. Just be patient and have faith in yourself."

Spring is finally here! It's finally getting nice enough to ride outside without freezing, enjoy!

Racing last weekend Christine Perez did 70.3 in beautiful San Juan, it was one hot and humid race! No easy conditions for those coming from the frigid north! Christine trained consistently through the toughest winter (almost all of her training was indoors) and did a great job hanging tough especially on the hot run. Sounded like a beautiful and fun place to race!
Chris Gillette ran 6 minutes faster this year in a local 10K, WOW now that's an improvement! Nice job and he'll be ready to race some tri's this year!
Up this weekend Ray Long will run the Eastern States 20 miler and Katie Devir will run her second marathon at the DC National Marathon! Good luck!

The racing season has started for some and will start for a few others in the next few weeks!
Make sure to cheer Christine Perez on this weekend she will be racing the 70.3 race in Puerto Rico! She has trained hard and is ready to rock the course! Good Luck!
Katie Devir finished her first marathon in Hyannis on 2/27! She wasn't feeling 100% on race day, but she worked through it and finished in style crossing the finish line with her two nieces! She'll line up for her second marathon on 3/26 in DC. Good luck Katie!
David Ellis did his first ever bike race in Bethel Criterium on 3/6 and finished 2nd in his category-nice job!
Chris Gillette will run a local 10K this weekend, great way to get the season rolling. Good luck Chris!
I'm itching to see everyones winter hard work pay off with some races now that spring is close! |
